SILVERSTOCK 2022

3 days of peace & making…

A hill overlooking rolling Cotswold countryside was the setting for our inaugural SILVERSTOCK event.

SILVERSTOCK was organised to give makers an opportunity to work without constraints, to experiment outside their normal practice, workshop set ups and tooling… TO PLAY and make discoveries.

10 wonderful, open hearted makers gathered and spent the weekend living, eating and making together using only tools they could make or source in their surroundings - this led to organic finds such as fallen trees and stone being employed, along with some surprising scavenged items like a leaf blower and fire pit (the latter to avoid accidents in the middle of a heatwave). Over the weekend the makers created tools and finished works, often outside their normal practice. The difficulties they had to overcome working outside frequently reminded us of the challenges our Bronze Age ancestors faced; and their problem solving was equally ingenious!

SILVERSTOCK gave these makers more than a making experience - they forged bonds which we hope will provide support networks for many years to come. The work created during this weekend is quite extraordinary - please scroll down this page to find out more, view images of the weekend and to meet the makers involved.

SILVERSTOCK would not have been possible with the generous support of

The London Assay Office who supplied the makers with silver sheet and wire for the event.

The finished objects will proudly bear the Platinum Jubilee Hallmark from the London Assay Office

We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all the wonderful makers, our event sponsors - The London Assay Office, Annabel Hood for documenting the weekend, Sarah Collins for her help looking after everyone, and to our VIP guests for joining us on the final evening.

A selection of works

  • Howard Fenn

Howard was a vital part of Silverstock, and started the event off in great style, focussing on creating a vitally needed hearth for annealing. His works over the weekend centred on discovering the limits of the material, granulation and distortion.

  • Rauni Higson

Rauni’s normal practice is a love letter to the Welsh mountains which surround her home. At Silverstock her time in the Cotswolds resulted in two substantial works, created from directly reacting to natural forms, and culminated in her balancing atop a sheet of silver perched on a quartz ‘anvil’ found on site.

  • Rebecca de Quin

Rebecca played a vital part in the weekend, not only her presence as a consummate maker, but also running our patination masterclass - which was a huge success. Her two works were a real departure from her usual style, organic in form and just as beautiful as the works we know her for.

  • Yusuke Yamamoto

We soon discovered Yusuke’s passion for fire, which he used to anneal the substantial vessel he raised; using a selection of pebbles and tree trunks, along with the tools he lovingly fashioned from a fallen Ash tree.

  • Cara Murphy

Our guiding hand for Silverstock; Cara is well known for working outdoors, along the coast of her native Ireland. Cara gave the other makers confidence and was a hugely valued member of the group.

  • Hal Messel

We were thrilled to have Hal join the group, his zest for life and talent for making was a real pleasure for the group and for us to see different parts of the industry work so harmoniously together. It was fascinating to watch his tool construction, which showed his considered approach to making.

  • Junko Mori

Junko’s approach was a delight to watch - her passion for nature and viewing it close up is completely infectious. Junko created a range of pieces which interacted directly with the environment in a playful and poignantly ephemeral manner.

  • Rebecca Oldfield

Rebecca was one of two early career makers invited to Silverstock, she really made the absolute most of the opportunity of working with a large piece of silver, with exciting results.

  • Wayne Meeten

Wayne is well known for his precise and delicate Japanese hammer work, his work at Silverstock didn’t disappoint - Wayne veered away from his normal practice, working in wire: gentle, ethereal and fragile - his appreciation of being at one with nature (along with his fearsome ping pong skills) was a delight to behold.

  • Callum Partridge

Callum’s energy all weekend was exceptional, arriving by bicycle, and making three large pieces in quick succession! His playful interactions with the silver were infectious and departed completely from his usual controlled and precise approach. Callum fully took on the brief of play!

Patination masterclass

Rebecca de Quin’s patination masterclass was a fascinating foray into the subject - using only household items some incredible finishes were achieved in only 48hrs.

On the final evening of SILVERSTOCK the results were revealed and were astonishing. The prize for the most eye catching sample went to a most unpleasant secret ingredient - cat litter, which resulted in an incredible sulphurous blue finish

We are very grateful to Rebecca for running the masterclass, and to Westwind Oak Framing for supplying us with oak shavings and Bath Ales for their beer - both used as a medium to store samples during the process.
